Let's begin with the question: Is philosophy useful? Then, we'll look at the paradigm of thought before philosophy, often called myth-making. We'll examine the Epic of Gilgamesh, as it is the first written literature that poses a philosophically interesting question, let alone the oft-cited model for the hero's journey. We'll also learn about the influence of the Bible and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Especially, this study raises the question of how to live a good life in a world where the real causes of the universe are the gods. In this world, living well means being loved by gods and cannot depend on pure personal efforts and talents, as we find in the tragedies of Oedipus. 1. The Epic of Gilgamesh for its first conception of the hero's journey. 2. The unity and continuity of the Bible through typology theory, where Isaac and Abraham foreshadow events in the New Testament. 3. How Homer explores human values using parallel structures in the Iliad and Odyssey. 4. The worldview and concept of living a good life under the pre-philosophical thinking paradigm.
