But earlier this year, the Securities and Exchange Commission called Theranos "an elaborate, years-long fraud" in which Holmes had persuaded investors to sink hundreds of millions of dollars into her company. Wall Street Journal investigative reporter John Carreyrou first broke that story and chronicles the collapse of Theranos in his new book, Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup.
