Voter turnout has been on the decline across the country for some time now. According to Statistics Canada, the main reasons why Canadians abstained from voting in the last federal election in 2021 were lack of interest in politics, illness or disability (for people aged 75 and over), or people being too busy. Low voter could result in an electorate that is not representative of society as a whole. More than 20 countries around the world have adopted mandatory voting to increase turnout, including Australia, which was the first country to introduce it back in 1924. Outburst took to the streets to find out what Canadians think about the idea of mandatory voting in Canadian elections.
