For many people Ares Capital is a great way of boosting their average dividend yield. As of right now the yield is hovering around 9%, and let’s be real here. That’s a pretty insane number. And to be honest, since I added this stock to my portfolio a couple of months ago, I really enjoyed it. The stock is trading sideways year to date with lots of ups and downs. Which are all great opportunities to add more shares if you believe the stock is undervalued. And it is very important to keep a close eye on these stocks when you have invested in them, because as soon as that dividend gets cut you are in big trouble. Lucky for us, the recent earnings were pretty solid, but more in that in a minute. Looking at their 5 year return including dividends, we see that they underperformed the SP500 by quite the margin. But for most people it’s more about generating cash than having a high appreciation. And in the end, 80% is not that bad after all. Especially since they were pretty close in beating the SP500 a few times. What does ARCC do? Ares Capital Corp is a United States-based closed-ended specialty finance company. It generates both current income and capital appreciation through debt and equity investments. The company focuses on investing primarily in U.S. middle-market companies with investment opportunities as well as in larger companies.
