The Assam government has imposed a restriction on visiting hours at the cremation site of late singer Zubeen Garg, now officially named “Zubeen Kshetra.” Fans will only be able to visit the site at Hatimura in Kamarkuchi, on the outskirts of Guwahati, from 6 am to 10 pm every day. The move comes following a Cabinet discussion led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 23, where the government cited the growing footfall and the need to ensure discipline and sanctity of the place. The government has also announced a complete ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol and intoxicated entry within and around the premises. "We need to protect the sanctity of the place. Now whoever lands in Assam would want to visit Zubeen Kshetra — are we going to show all that at his cremation site? People do not need to visit the site at 2 am. Is there any such need? The sun rises at 4 am — one can go after that. What is the need to go there at 1 am or 2 am? This cannot continue — not till the time I am the Chief Minister," the CM said. The move, however, has not gone down well among many of Zubeen’s fans and admirers. Several social-media users have expressed disappointment, calling the restriction an unnecessary attempt to control how people choose to pay their respects. For many, Zubeen Kshetra is more than a memorial — it’s a space of emotional connection and collective remembrance. Meanwhile, Garima Saikia Garg, wife of the late singer, who visited Zubeen Kshetra on the evening of October 23, also spoke about the restriction and urged the government to consider all aspects before reaching a final decision. "I think allowing people till 12 am should not be a problem. People have assured that they will take up the responsibilities. Let’s see what happens next. Since people have given this assurance, I have faith in them — they have been looking after everything all these days,” Garima added. ========= Support Independent Journalism by becoming Our Premium Member: https://eastmojo.com/eastmojo-subscri... ========= Subscribe to never miss an update: / @eastmojoofficial ========= Visit our website: https://www.eastmojo.com/ Become a Premium Member: https://eastmojo.com/eastmojo-subscri...
