It does not matter what the stone is but I would recommend something quite large and cut with good symmetry. This makes the job easier to accomplish well. There are many cut gemstones that can be bought for very little money. Low quality large Citrines, Topaz and Amethysts can be easily found for just tens of pounds. I give instructions assuming you already have experience hand making jewellery with a good ability to solder, saw and file.
