You’ve probably stumbled upon one of these trendy videos on the Miracle Fruit. Some of these videos probably gave you a short scientific explanation or a reaction. The purpose of this video is to go deeper into the chemistry behind the Miracle Fruit and elaborate on the biochemistry while keeping this video short and sweet. --- My Extra Thoughts: 1. The Miracle Fruit is also called the Miracle Berry. Botanically, it’s a drupe since it has a pit. You can remove the pit like you would for an apricot. Some botanists will argue that drupes are not berries, just depending on who you talk to. That’s why I’m calling it the Miracle Fruit, as it’s the safest answer. 2. Miracle Fruit has a short shelf life and miraculin breaks down upon being heated. It’s freeze dried into a powder or pills. I haven’t done enough research into these topics: 3. The Miracle Fruit thrives in acidic soils (~4 pH). As to whether soil pH affect miraculin, I don’t know. 4. It seems like other tastes (Bitter, Salty, and even Spicy and Basic/Alkaline) don’t have a significant effect. Nor does eating both the Miracle Fruit and Acid. 5. Apparently weaker acids have a sweeter taste compared to stronger acids. 6. It seems like the duration of the effect depends on the concentration of miraculin, how long it was in contact with the tongue and the concentration of the acid. 7. I would be intrigued if there was a Miraculin + Pea Tea Drink, as both depend on pH. I am ignoring these topics: 8. I am ignoring the historical, political and ethnobotanical use of the Miracle Fruit, the FDA and Sugar Industry for the sake of keeping this video simple. 9. I am also leaving out the botanical info (Native, Family, Environment), as it’ll take too much time/space. --- Identification: Accurate species identification requires genetic analysis (More Detail Info Under "Research Methods"). Feel free to comment any potential misidentifications. In addition, I utilize iNaturalist, Picture Mushroom, and PlantNet for identifications. --- Disclaimer: While I lack expertise in botany and identify as a complete amateur, feel free to correct any errors or contribute additional information. Remember, just because a source claims a plant, fungi, algae etc. is edible doesn't guarantee its safety! And please, take a joke as a joke :) --- #botany #candy #sugar
