Today, February 21, is the birthday of Cara Marie Loughran. She died one week before her 15th birthday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Cara was a Disney fanatic, loved superhero movies, enjoyed Irish dancing and gymnastics, and idolized many female Olympians. She was a ray of sunshine with a bubbly personality, and a laugh that brought a smile to everyone in her presence. Although she could be quiet and a little timid, she managed to make friends everywhere she went and always had a kind word for those she encountered. An honor roll student, Cara loved school and particularly enjoyed English and history. She was active in Key Club and Best Buddies, volunteered at her church, and enjoyed crafting and DIY projects on her own time. Her favorite colors were purple and turquoise which she often incorporated into her crafts including tie-dying shirts. Her favorite place to be was on a beach, and her favorite foods were Italian pizzas and pastas. Although she hadn’t selected a specific career path yet, she was determined to get a college degree and knew that she wanted to make a difference in the world. Cara and 16 others died on February 14, 2018, because an unstable 18-year-old was able to purchase an AR-15. Raising the age limit for purchasing certain weapons would have made a difference. Even better, a ban on assault weapons would have made a difference. The attacker attacked killed 17 and wounded 17 with gunfire. Despite his callous attitude toward his victims, he was granted life in prison rather than the death penalty. #HonorWithAction #sensiblegunlaws
