(31 Mar 1996) T/I 11:09:15 On Sunday (31/3), the Egyptian government allowed three ships carrying more than 5,000 Irish cattle to unload in Alexandria. The cattle had been stranded at sea for a week after the Egyptians imposed a ban on all European cattle, in response to the scare that British beef may be infected with BSE (mad cow disease). The Egyptians lifted the general cattle ban on Friday (29/3) - only British cattle remain barred. Cattle from one of the ships, the "Siba Ebolo" were destined for army consumption, and a military vet went on board to take blood samples from the cattle.
