St Andrews Castle, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The castle can be found on The Scores, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. St Andrews Castle is a historic castle located in the Royal Burgh of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The original castle was built around 1200 by Bishop Roger de Beaumont, son of the Earl of Leicester. During the Wars of Independence, the castle was captured, recaptured, dismantled, and rebuilt multiple times. St Andrews Castle served as the official residence of Scotland's leading bishop (and later archbishop) throughout the Middle Ages, signifying its importance and power. It became the centre of the Medieval Catholic Church in Scotland as the seat of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and the Bishops and Archbishops of St Andrews. The castle played a significant role in the ecclesiastical and political history of Scotland before the Protestant Reformation. In the 16th century, during the Protestant Reformation, the castle became a stronghold for Protestant reformers, including John Knox. The castle was besieged by French troops in 1546 and underwent a series of conflicts and sieges until it was finally captured by the Scottish crown in 1572. Over time, the castle fell into ruin, and today, the principal remains include a portion of the south wall enclosing a square tower, the "bottle dungeon," the kitchen tower, and the underground mine. St Andrews Castle is now owned by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. It is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's rich history and architectural heritage.
