After nearly 14 years of relentless conflict, Syria has finally gained independence on 8 December 2024. However, the war has left unimaginable devastation: over 14 million people displaced, homes reduced to rubble, and basic necessities like water and electricity destroyed. Since 2013, we at KHOM have supported Syrian refugees with essential aid, education, shelter, sanitation and more. Recently, we asked mothers of orphans in our Karisma EduDream program in Jordan about their plans to return home. Their heartbreaking responses were unanimous: “All our family members were killed, and our homes are rubble. Returning means homelessness, no food, no water, and no education for our children. While our ground team in Idlib, Syria asked the internally displaced about their current status, this is their response: ”“There is nothing to return to. Villages and homes are destroyed, wells poisoned with acid, and no land remains for farming.” – Villagers of Al-Taliie Camp, Syria. The war may have ended, but their struggles continue. Winter is here, and for thousands of refugees, returning home is not an option. The cold season brings additional risks, especially for children, the elderly, and vulnerable families.
