Nutrition in Plants• Conduct investigations to seek the answer that leaves other than green also carry photosynthesis • Give examples of heterotrophs. To show light is essential for photosynthesis. 2.Collect leaves of different Colours – check that photosynthesis also occur in these coloured leaves. 3.Growing fungi on a bread. Observe the patches on the bread under a microscope or with the help of magnifying glass and write the observation in your note book. 🌱 1. Photosynthesis • Definition: The process by which green plants make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. • Equation: Carbon dioxide + Water → (with sunlight and chlorophyll) → Glucose + Oxygen ________________________________________ 🌈 2. Do only green leaves photosynthesize? • No! Leaves of other colours (like red, purple, yellow) also perform photosynthesis. • They contain chlorophyll, but it is hidden under other coloured pigments. 📌 Activity: • Collect leaves of different colours. • Test for starch after keeping them in sunlight. • Starch presence = Photosynthesis has happened. ________________________________________ 💡 3. Light is essential for Photosynthesis • Without sunlight, plants cannot make food. 📌 Activity: • Cover part of a leaf with black paper. • Keep the plant in sunlight. • Later test both covered and uncovered parts for starch. • Only the uncovered part shows starch – proving light is needed. ________________________________________ 🍞 4. Fungi on Bread • When bread is left moist and warm, fungi (like mold) grow on it. • They appear as black, green, or white patches. 📌 Observation Activity: • Look at moldy bread using a magnifying glass or microscope. • You will see thread-like structures (called hyphae) and small round spores. ________________________________________ 🍄 5. Heterotrophs – Plants or organisms that cannot make their own food • They depend on others for nutrition. 📌 Examples: • Fungi (like mushrooms, mold) • Cuscuta (Amarbel – a plant that steals food from other plants) • Humans and animals ________________________________________ 📝 Summary: • Photosynthesis happens in all leaves, not just green ones. • Sunlight is very important for plants to make food. • Fungi are non-green organisms that get their food from dead and decaying matter. • Some plants and all animals are heterotrophs.
