https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/p... Hi, my name is Ndidi Unaka and I’m a pediatrician at Cincinnati Children’s. I’m a pediatric hospitalist which means I take care of children when they are really sick and need to come into the hospital. We have been getting a lot of questions from parents about the COVID-19 vaccine and one really common questions that we get from families: Why should I vaccinate when my child when the cases of COVID-19 are so low? Even though the number of COVID 19 cases are going down in the community compared to other time points in the pandemic, it is still spreading in our community. We also know that children and adolescents are the least vaccinated group, which means they're more vulnerable to serious illness and hospitalization. Finally, as COVID-19 spreads among the community, the virus can mutate and change and create new variants. As we increase the number of children and adolescents who are vaccinated, it means that our entire community can be more protected from the creation of new variants. Why vaccinate when disease is mild in most children? Another popular question that we get from parents is why vaccinate when disease is mild in most children? It's really important to know that the vaccine is safe for children and adolescents and the vaccine can keep kids from getting COVID-19 in the first place. I think it's also really important that parents know that the vaccine can protect children from developing serious illness and being hospitalized. We learned that during the Omicron surge that nine out of 10 children who were hospitalized with COVID 19 were not vaccinated. Why vaccinate when family members have already had COVID and did just fine? Another common question that we get from parents is why vaccinate when other family members have already gotten COVID-19 and did just fine? It's important to recognize that you can become infected with COVID 19 more than once. Also, children getting vaccinated helps protect other individuals that they are around who might be more susceptible to serious disease. Individuals like older adults, grandparents, people who are not eligible to get the vaccine, as well as individuals with weakened immune systems or complex medical problems. If you would like more information about the COVID-19 vaccine, please don't hesitate to talk to your pediatrician.
