I decided to do York, Sacagawea, and Toussaint Charbonneau because I don't believe we have accurate depictions of them. Thus, I felt more freedom customizing them. York was an enslaved servant to William Clark. He hunted for the group, tended to the sick, went on scouting trips, and was instrumental in interacting with the Native Americans encountered. The Native Americans had never seen a black man before and felt that he had special powers. They called him Big Medicine. I imagine York enjoyed the most freedom he had ever experienced as a servant on this trip. It must have been traumatic not to have received his freedom after the trip ended after two years, four months, and ten days. The trip started in 1804 and concluded in 1806. He did receive his freedom 9 years later in 1815. I do want to make Sergeant Charles Floyd, because he is the only one that died on the trip and there is a painting of his likeness. I would also like to make Lewis and Clark for the same reason. In the meantime, I dressed York in some of the same articles of clothing as I did Toussaint. I wanted red to be a predominant theme in the Corps of Discovery collection. So far I think everyone looks good, but that's just my perception. I hope you agree. Regardless, please everyone have a great day and have fun collecting and/or customizing!!!
