Diana is looking at ‘reflection’ in the latest episode of This Week’s Word. We’re not talking about mirrors! To reflect is to consider what we have done, what we are doing, what we will do, and how we can do it all better. In this week’s episode, Diana highlights a particular theory of reflection which was developed by philosopher Donald Schön. In his book, ‘The Reflective Practitioner’, Schön identified two different types of reflection; one which takes place during an activity, and one which takes place after. Reflection which takes place during an event is known as ‘Reflection in Action’. During this scenario, you are thinking on your feet, deciding what to do next, and acting on your thoughts. For example, while you’re watching Diana’s video, you may decide you want to ask her a question about this week’s episode. Reflection which takes place after the event is known as ‘Reflection on Action’. After the event, you are reviewing what did happen, what you might do differently in the future, and analysing what you remember happened. For example, after watching the video, you might discuss the content of this week’s episode with a friend. Reflection is an important process, enabling us to assess and improve ourselves and our actions on an ongoing basis. Use reflection to improve your decision making, both in life and in business.
