Early in my MMA career I had some successes. The later part of my career was not the case. There are reasons and factors for both. Psychologically and physically, the reasons are mixed and the outcomes differ. As a professional athlete we are prone to distractions, fears, uncertainties and physical discomforts. Not much different from being a professional soldier. And after working in both fields it took years to identify and understand the differences with respect to consistent optimal performance. What I found towards the end of my MMA career was my 'why' for fighting was no longer what it was during this fight with BJ Ferguson. At this time in 2012, I was highly motivated to fight in the UFC. My goals and drive was fighting at the highest levels both in the Military and in the sport of MMA. While operating at my former Military Unit and fighting professionally, I was fortunate and blessed to have fought and won the WRECK MMA Bantamweight Championship belt. After a 5 round battle with Eric Perez, I defended the belt in this fight against BJ Ferguson. Both Eric and BJ are tough and talented fighters. In this particular fight with BJ, we (our team and coaches) thought it would be best to try and keep the fight standing. Was able to finish the fight in the 5th. Hats off to both Eric Perez and BJ Ferguson for these opportunities. Without game opponents willing to mix it up, the athlete is left short on achieving his goal (whatever that might be). We need fighters willing to fight. We need promoters willing to provide a platform for the athletes to fight. Thank you to all those who have and still do.
