Poplar Hardwood: Uses, Characteristics, and Identification Guide

At Baird Brothers, we know there are a lot of wood species you can choose from for your project. But how do you know which one to pick? In this video, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks chats with Terry Baird on the characteristics of poplar wood. Watch as Terry Baird explains the projects that poplar lumber is typically used for, whether it’s for the look or durability. Learn facts about poplar trees, workability, and how it ranks on the Janka hardness test. Other common names for poplar include tulipwood, yellow poplar, white poplar, and canary whitewood. Tulip poplar received its name because its flowers resemble tulips. The tulip tree’s scientific name is Liriodendron tulipifera. Poplar trees are found throughout North America, primarily in the United States and Canada. Poplar wood is a popular choice for paint-grade and finger-jointed products. It is easy to work with and paints well. Poplar is close to softwood but has great durability and resists warping. Poplar is rigid and stiff, which is a benefit for use in woodworking projects. However, its softness gives it poor sanding properties. Poplar wood shows a difference in color between the heartwood and sapwood. The heartwood has a green tint while the sapwood appears more white or a pale yellowish-brown. It has a subdued grain (compared to other woods) that highlights these colors. Poplar stains well but is best used with a darker stain, as lighter ones may highlight the different colors of heartwood and sapwood. Depending on the stain, poplar can be made up to appear as a more expensive wood product. Poplar can be used for mouldings, painted interior doors, painted cabinetry, pallets, furniture frames, and paneling. Because of its softness, it is not recommended to be used as flooring.
