Story behind the name Janti Dhunga: Long time ago, it is believed that a deity named Mahankal was leading a wedding procession (Janti) from Panchakanya, Basdole. The god, along with the groom’s party, was on the way to their destination when dawn began to break. As the rooster crowed, announcing the arrival of morning, a divine event occurred — the entire wedding procession, including Mahankal himself, was turned into stone. Since then, the place has been known as “Janti Dhunga,” which literally translates to “the Stone of the Wedding Procession.” Locals regard the stone figures as sacred remnants of that divine moment. In remembrance and reverence, they established a Mahankal Than (shrine) nearby, where people still offer worship to this day, especially on the occasion of Shrawane Sangranti and Maghe Sangranti.
