Our Annual Zambrero x Rise Against Hunger Vision trips are a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Plate 4 Plate initiative first-hand. We work closely with our charity partner, Rise Against Hunger, to bring these trips to life to share the incredible work that is done by their team and from the meals that are donated by Zambrero. In 2024 we travelled to Kenya where we visited the various schools and projects run by the Rise Against Hunger team in partnership with a local NGO in Kenya. These trips are attended by Zambrero's Annual Conference Award winners and the Rise Against Hunger team, totalling ~15 people. Kenya's Hunger Statistics In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Kenya ranks 90th out of the 125 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2023 GHI scores. With a score of 22.0, Kenya has a level of hunger that is serious. ● Years of drought is one factor contributing to increased food insecurity ● Rise Against Hunger partners with Rural Family Hope, an NGO in Kenya on the Lisha Kwa Maarifa [Feed for Knowledge] project in support of seven schools in Southwestern Kenya. This program is funded in large part by Zambrero. ● One third of Kenyans suffer from poverty and 55% are children. The Kenyan Integrated Household Budget Survey showed 36% were undernourished. The government implemented school feeding programs but their coverage only reaches 17% of schools. Southwestern Kenya (project area) has the lowest school feeding in the country at 0.4 - 2.3%. Malnutrition in this area sits around 26 - 49% which is worse than the country average. These 7 schools have poor WASH conditions with limited access to running water and poor sanitation About our Impact in Kenya Zambrero's Plate 4 Plate initiative helps support Rise Against Hunger to partner with Rural Family Hope, a local NGO in Kenya on the Lisha Kwa Maarifa [Feed for Knowledge] project in support of seven schools in Southwestern Kenya. The project goals are; ● To improve nutritional status of learners in the seven assisted schools ● To enhance academic performance and attendance of learners ● To promote healthy eating habits and reduce malnutrition ● To support local agriculture and food systems by sourcing food locally from farmers and suppliers ● To increase community involvement and ownership in the project The objectives of the project include; ● To provide daily nutritious meals to all learners and school staff in the assisted schools ● To improve academic performance and attendance by reducing hunger-related absenteeism and improving concentration and alertness ● To monitor and evaluate the nutritional status of learners ● To work with local farmers and food producers to source fresh, locally-grown food for the project ● To involve parents, teachers, and community members in the planning and implementation of the project ● To build the capacity of school staff to manage and sustain the project over the long term
