Why is it so rare to find right division when it is so clearly the right interpretive approach to God’s Word? That question is explored and explained. Then we press on into John 16 and the Lord’s great prayer of John 17. God’s greatest demonstration of love at the cross of Christ lies ahead. The video, titled "Why Don’t Churches Rightly Divide? John 16 & 17," by the DenverGrace channel, argues that most churches fail to "rightly divide the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15), leading to a system of religious performance over God's grace, and follows with an exposition of John chapters 16 and 17. The Problem with Modern Churches and Grace The speaker begins by addressing the question of why "right division" (Dispensationalism, focusing on Pauline grace) is widely rejected by churches [00:15]. The main issue, according to the video, is that churches confuse grace in salvation with performance in sanctification [02:12]. Performance Trap: Many believers are constantly told they must earn what God has already freely given through religious duties like tithing, frequent church attendance, witnessing, water baptism, and confessing sins (1 John 1:9 is viewed as a discipline, not a condition for being "fellowshipped" by God) [02:37]. Old Man vs. New Creation: The speaker explains that true Christian living is not about "self-improvement" or "flesh improvement." Instead, it involves recognizing one's new nature/new creation in Christ and learning to walk by grace [06:05]. The "flesh" or "old man" is a lost cause that was crucified with Christ [05:34]. The Great House: This departure from Pauline grace began early (2 Timothy 1:15), resulting in a "great house" (the religious system/Churchianity) that is a mixed multitude of saved and unsaved people [13:44]. The speaker advises believers to "flee religious lusts" and get out of the confusing system [15:08]. Exposition of John Chapter 16 In John 16, Jesus is preparing the disciples for His departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit (the "Helper" or Paracletos) [25:51]. The World's Hatred: Jesus warns the disciples that the world will hate them because it hated Him first, particularly because of their testimony about Christ [21:37]. Ministry of the Holy Spirit: The Spirit's new ministry will be to convict the world concerning three things [26:28]: Sin: Because they do not believe in Christ (making it a "Son problem," not a "sin problem") [27:32]. Righteousness: Because Christ is returning to the Father [29:36]. Judgment: Because the ruler of this world (Satan) is judged at the cross [30:13]. The Need for Right Division in Prayer: Jesus promises the disciples that at Pentecost and beyond (under the Kingdom program), they would receive whatever they asked for in His name [37:38]. The speaker stresses that believers in the present "age of grace" do not have this same benefit, noting how even Paul later had to leave Trophimus sick and told Timothy to take wine for his stomach, demonstrating that "ask and you will receive" must be rightly divided from current doctrine [39:15]. Exposition of John Chapter 17 The speaker calls this chapter the Lord's Prayer (rather than the "Our Father" of Matthew 6) [45:09], which Jesus prays for His immediate disciples and future believers. Glorification and Sanctification: Jesus prays for the Father to glorify Him through the cross, seeing the cross not as shame but as glory because it accomplishes the work given to Him [46:20]. He also prays for the sanctification (setting apart for holy purposes) of the disciples through the truth: "Thy word is truth" [57:42]. The Son of Perdition: Jesus states that none of the men were lost except "the son of perdition" (Judas), the same title given to the Antichrist in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 [51:44]. Prayer for Us: Jesus prays not only for the 11, but for "them also which shall believe on me through their word" [59:02], which includes all future believers. He prays that they may be one in the same way He and the Father are one [01:00:00]. Personal Atonement: The speaker concludes by emphasizing that the cross was a deeply personal act of love—when Christ died, He had you in mind, accomplishing a vast number of transactions for the believer, including canceling transgressions, imputing righteousness, and creating a new creation [01:00:47].
