The once bare peak now revealed cloud towers, jeweled terraces, a jade palace, lions guarding the gate, and heavenly horses leading the way. Following Tong Lü inside, Yu saw the Goddess seated on a throne guarded by a blue dragon and a white tiger. Only then did he recognize her and hurried to bow in gratitude. The Goddess invited him to sit and sincerely said, “You have made contributions in controlling the floods, but you must also understand the boundless transformations of all things.” “For example, you need a boat to cross the sea, a sled to cross mud, a carriage on dry land, and a sedan chair on mountain roads. Otherwise, you will be trapped on land or drowned in water, and carving mountains and clearing rivers will be much harder.” She then ordered the maid Ronghua to open a red treasure chest and presented Yu with a sacred scroll wrapped in yellow silk, saying, “This book will teach you knowledge and methods to command tigers and subdue dragons.” “But more divine and human strength will be needed to dredge the Nine Rivers, so I will also send Geng Chen and Yu Yu to assist you.” Yu accepted the scroll, thanked the Goddess, and descended the mountain with Geng Chen and Yu Yu. Together they built boats, sleds, carriages, and sedan chairs. After many years, he finally cleared the Nine Rivers. The Goddess stayed on Mount Wu for several days. Though she could have returned to the Western Heaven, she chose to remain—and remained for thousands of years. One day, standing atop Mount Wu, she saw wooden boats in danger at Kuixia Gorge upstream and Qingtan downstream, with many travelers and boatmen swallowed by treacherous waters. Looking closely, she realized that along the seven-hundred-li stretch of the Three Gorges were more than a thousand hidden reefs, upright and scattered, causing countless accidents. She summoned a flock of divine birds to fly above the gorge, guiding ships safely through the difficult waterways. Still uneasy, she kept watch day and night. She also saw fierce tigers and leopards roaming the mountains, frightening people into hiding in caves. She ordered her attendants to drive away the beasts daily, allowing people to farm and gather firewood once again. When she saw drought harming the crops, she summoned clouds and rain to ensure good harvests and prosperous lives. When miasma caused illness, she planted medicinal herbs along mountains and rivers to ease people’s suffering. Busy day and night, she forgot to return to the Western Heaven and even forgot herself, standing atop Mount Wu watching over the land. Over time, she transformed into the graceful Goddess Peak, and her attendants became surrounding peaks. These peaks encircled her like a screen, dedicating their youth and happiness to the mountains and waters of the Three Gorges. The people of the Three Gorges were deeply moved by all she had done and honored her as the “True Goddess of Wondrous Power.” To repay her selfless devotion, they built a temple in her honor, also called the Temple of Eternal Truth, where people continue to offer incense and give thanks.
