Israeli settlers have been promoting adverts for properties in southern Lebanon and calling on residents to evacuate their ‘ancestral land’ since the 2024 bombardment. It fits into broader far-right ambitions of Greater Israel, which would redraw the country’s borders into Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia– as well as the entirety of the occupied Palestinian territories. Is this invasion part of those plans? It has been characterised as a war of self-defence by the Israeli government, following Hezbollah attacks since it joined the regional war on 2nd March. Experts have pointed out similarities to the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, which was also characterised as self-defence against the PLO— but damaged Israeli security in the long term by causing violent resistance in the form of Hezbollah to flourish. Speaking to MEE Live's Mathilda Mallinson, Israeli journalist Gideon Levy argues the lessons of history have not been learned, and this will only hurt regional security. Support stories that matter.
