The old batch tatami mats ran out a long time ago, but finally I have new mats. As I’m quite rusty, only the basics this time. This was the first cutting session with the new batch of tatami mats. Not all tatami mats are created equal. When ordering I assumed ‘high quality’ were like the mats I’m used to, while ‘basic quality’ would be something too soft. The new mats are quite a bit more dense than what I am used to. Tougher to roll, and more importantly, tougher to cut. You really can’t get away with cutting too near the tip with these mats. Soaking tatami can be a bit of a pain in the ass. Tried a new set-up for soaking the mats - extra long planter boxes. For small batches of mats to soak, this works out great.
