With the previous R107 Series models, the completely redesigned 300 SL, 300 SL-24, and 500 SL types had almost nothing in common with the overall concept. The special excitement at the Geneva Motor Show was caused by the 500 SL, which, as the top model in the new SL series, was equipped with a 5.0-liter four-valve V8 engine with an output of 326 hp, making it the most powerful production car Mercedes-Benz.
