Learning a Song By Ear for Beginners: This is a very basic lesson to get those of you who have no music training to get started learning a song by ear. Step 1 – Try figuring out the first note/chord of the song (usually that first chord defines the key) Step 2 – Assume it’s a major key and use the major scale for that first chord (ex. B is the first chord, so use B major scale) Step 3 – Eliminate the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th notes in the scale and only work with the 1, 4, 5, and 6 notes. Step 4 – Begin using only those notes to figure out the main notes/chords of the song. Remember, this is a very basic lesson only to help you get started. There will be songs that use minor keys and chords other than the 1,4,5 and 6. But, this will get you started. Now find a song and start learning!
