Several years ago, I had the opportunity to turn around a struggling team on the brink of elimination. It didn't happen by storming in and making autonomous changes - it was a complete team turnaround effort. I recently told this story on the Connected Teamwork podcast with Olena Sergeeva. The team was underperforming and faced the risk of disbandment, which would have affected their jobs and livelihoods. Instead of taking immediate action, I took the team under my wing and focused on building strong connections. I spent time with the team, listening to their calls, and gathering their feedback. Together, we formed focus groups and betterment committees to understand the challenges we faced. I wanted them to be active participants in finding solutions and creating a turnaround strategy. We made necessary changes, cutting unnecessary call time and refining our call flow based on their inputs. Within two weeks, we saw a remarkable improvement. The team went from 78% of goal to 141% in month 1 and they still exist today. This experience taught me the power of teamwork and the importance of involving everyone in shaping the strategy and execution. When teams work together, acknowledge challenges, and create a shared strategy, anything is possible.
