Saliencia Brañas Trail (Somiedo) | Hiking Asturias | PR-AS 12 |

This hike is a top one and I will include it in my hall of fame of recommended hikes. The trail has everything to make it a great backpacking trip in Asturias (Spain): mountain range views, brañas, waterfalls as you go uphill, wild animals and plenty of fountains to drink from. Highly recommended specially if you start it early in the morning. This way you will ensure you see the wild animals in the beautiful area of Asturias named Somiedo. The trail is lineal and is 5.1 miles long (one way). It starts in the village of Arbellales and ends in Saliencia (both in Somiedo). The first 1.2 miles of the hike are uphill, with an elevation gain of 1493 feet. It is a steep part but very rewarding because of the views and the beauty of the surrounding area. As you follow a stream uphill you will have the chance to observe some waterfalls. After this initial part you reach the first of the three brañas in this trail (Braña de Ordiales de Arbeyales). Here you will find a fountain with very good water. This is an excellent point to stop and have some lunch while contemplating the teitos (huts) in the area together with the gorgeous views. The presence of the teitos surrounded by the mountains give this place a magical vibe. You could almost imagine a scene of the Lord of the Rings or of a book by Terry Goodkind happening here. The trail continues with beatufil view after gorgeous view. The last part is downhill down to saliencia, covering a distance of 0.8 miles and an elevation loss of around 700 feet. There you can stop in the picnic area and have a rest in preparation for the way back to the car. You will need to trace your steps back to the car.
