(28 Mar 2025) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Washington - 28 March 2025 1. Mid of people walking by Smithsonian sign 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Robin Cherry, New York resident: "I think this whole thing is a slippery slope. I also question whether or not the executive order can accomplish what he wants, but it scares me that if anything happens to Trump, JD Vance is in charge and he's in charge of this process." 3. Pan from sign to African American History museum 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Pagano, New York resident: "And it's interesting, we're standing in front of the museum of African American History as we do this talk. Do we now take down Oprah Winfrey's name from the theater?" 5. Mid of sign for African American history museum 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothy Wilson, Delaware resident: "Yes, it concerns me. Even in my time, the history, we didn't get a lot of teaching of history. Even now I'm excited about what I learn. The triple six (6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion), things like that I wasn't taught that. So I make a point of looking at that stuff on TV, reading on it, because I was not taught that. And which was --- It really hurts generations because your history is who you are." 7. Mid of sign for African American history museum 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Robin Cherry, New York resident: "Like we're becoming Nazi Germany. It's heartbreaking. This is not who we thought we were and it appears it's who we are. But I hope the people in Congress will stand up and keep him from doing this." 9. Wide of Washington monument with African American history museum in shadow 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Pagano, New York resident: "The history is here as long as people continue to tell the stories. African history, the history of slaves, is passed down from generation to generation to generation. The stories were told from grandparents to parents to children to grandchildren. They continue to be told today in a lot of communities, so the history doesn't go away. As long as there are people to tell the stories and people to write the books." 11. Mid of people pointing to Smithsonian sign STORYLINE: President Donald Trump on Thursday revealed his intention to force changes at the Smithsonian Institution with an executive order that targets funding for programs that advance “divisive narratives” and “improper ideology,” the latest step in a broadside against culture he deems too liberal. Trump claimed there has been a “concerted and widespread” effort over the past decade to rewrite American history by replacing “objective facts” with a “distorted narrative driven by ideology rather than truth,” adding that it casts the “founding principles” of the United States in a “negative light.” The order he signed behind closed doors puts Vice President JD Vance, who serves on the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents, in charge of overseeing efforts to “remove improper ideology” from all areas of the institution, including its museums, education and research centers, and the National Zoo. Trump singled out the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016 near the White House, the Women’s History Museum, which is in development, and the American Art Museum for criticism. “Museums in our Nation’s capital should be places where individuals go to learn — not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history,” he said. =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
