A massive, catastrophic landslide struck the villages of Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad on July 30th, following unprecedented rainfall of 572 mm in 48 hours. The disaster, which hit in the middle of the night, involved debris flowing at speeds of 100 km/h, wiping out homes, bridges, and businesses, and tragically killing 298 people. Survivors recount harrowing tales of being swept away in their sleep and losing everything in an instant. In the immediate aftermath, a heroic rescue effort saw local people construct a temporary bridge to save 485 trapped individuals before official help could fully mobilize. The subsequent search for victims was a grim and traumatic task, with bodies and over 200 body parts recovered miles downstream. One year later, the community is struggling to rebuild. While the government provides some financial aid, many families find it insufficient and face challenges with housing, lost livelihoods, and unresolved bank loans. A major rehabilitation project to build a new township is underway but has faced significant delays. Controversy surrounds the official report that designated "Go-zones" and "No-Go zones," as many families living just outside the restricted areas feel unsafe due to isolation and increased wildlife threats. The disaster also crippled the local economy, particularly agriculture and tourism, leaving many jobless. Experts warn that due to climate change, the Western Ghats remain highly vulnerable to future landslides, highlighting the urgent need for better early warning systems and long-term disaster management plans for Kerala On July 30, 2024, a landslide changed the course of a river and erased 298 lives — the people of Punappuzha now live between “before” and “after”. 00:04:46 - Chapter 1 00:26:42 - Chapter 2 Introduction: A Land of Scars and Memories The Scale of Destruction at Dawn Life in the Relief Camps & Psychological Trauma The Pain of Starting Over Moving On: A New, Difficult Life Rebuilding Lives: Small Steps Forward The Rehabilitation Project: A New Township Unresolved Issues: Land, Loans, and Livelihoods The Microplan and Its Failures The Unseen Victims: Indirectly Affected Families The Future: Climate Change and a Call for Action Conclusion: A Reminder for Kerala Click Here to free Subscribe: https://bit.ly/mathrubhumiyt Stay Connected with Us Website: https://www.mathrubhumi.com/ Facebook- / mathrubhumidotcom Twitter- https://twitter.com/mathrubhumi?lang=en Instagram- / mathrubhumidotcom Telegram: https://t.me/mathrubhumidotcom Whatsapp: https://www.whatsapp.com/channel/0029... #wayanadlandslide #chooralmalalandslide #mundakkailandslide #wayanadlandslide2024
