Backpacking the John Muir Trail | Evolution Valley, Muir Rock & McClure Meadow Day 2 of Our JMT adventure takes us deep into the heart of the Sierra Nevada, following the South Fork of the San Joaquin River before climbing the switchbacks into the beautiful Evolution Valley. Known as one of the most breathtaking sections of the entire John Muir Trail, this stretch is packed with waterfalls, dramatic peaks, some wildlife and unforgettable wilderness views. Along the way, we discover the elusive engraved Muir Rock, pass through McClure Meadow and the McClure Ranger Station, and set up camp below the switchbacks leading to Evolution Basin.
