The semi fast Newcastle service continued once an hour to Edinburgh via Hexham and Carlisle while the fast service terminated at Newcastle. LNER services on this route operated twice an hour at the time of filming with 1 service with this calling pattern continuing to Edinburgh calling at Berwick-upon-Tweed every hour with limited extensions to Aberdeen and Inverness. The semi fast service calling at Peterborough, Newark North Gate, Doncaster, York, Northallerton, Darlington and Durham continued to Edinburgh every hour with limited extensions to Glasgow Central. Together these services form a roughly half hour London to Newcastle service. Additional LNER services operate between London and Doncaster/York on this route on Leeds, York, Hull and Lincoln services. Between York and Newcastle Cross Country provide other services mainly on the Plymouth to Edinburgh route and TransPennine Express operate services between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle as well as to Middlesbrough which leave the ECML after Northallerton. Grand Central operate additional services between London and York on the Sunderland route and Lumo provide additional low cost London to Edinburgh limited stop services via Newcastle. Hull trains serve the ECML south of Doncaster. At stations between York and Newcastle connections can be made with local Northern services and with the Tyne and Wear Metro at Newcastle. On the ECML between London and Stevenage Great Northern and Thameslink operate many other fast and stopping services to destinations such as Cambridge and Peterborough as well as Northern City Line services to Moorgate on the slow lines south of Stevenage. The rolling stock on LNER services on this route is class 800 bi mode and class 801 electric Azuma trains in 5, 9 and 10 (5+5) formations on services north of York. South of York some services are still formed of class 91 hauled Intercity 225 formations. Other rolling stock used on parts of this route include class 220 and class 221 Voyage/Super Voyager, class 180, class 802, class 387, class 700 as well as other rolling stock less frequently. This route is electrified throughout with overhead AC electrification. LNER services are electric operated on the main core ECML routes with some services operated by bi modes due to continuing to unelectrified routes, mainly in Scotland. This route is at least double track throughout with mostly 4 track between London and Peterborough and York and Northallerton.
