I've had many requests from people looking for guidance on how to play rockabilly rhythm guitar, so I am doing a short series to cover this topic. This episode looks at the origins of rockabilly rhythm playing and is based on an interview with Charlie Feathers in the 1980s. In it he explains the influence of Southern Blues and Bill Munro's guitar styles on Elvis' playing. Charlie is a phenomenal singer and player but he goes very fast with his explanation and also his guitar is not in standard tuning, making it tricky to follow. This video is an attempt to further explain the knowledge he shared about the development of Elvis guitar style around 1954. I don't think Elvis would have sat down and tabbed the rhythm parts out the way I have here - he would just have absorbed the beat of his influences and that would have come out in his playing. For me, this is the best way to play rhythm guitar because you want to keep the music spontaneous and alive.
