I’m sure you’ve heard by now that exercise improves your mental health. This video takes a closer look into the science of how exercise helps brain function and changes the way we think, feel, and act. The National Institute of Mental Health claims that one in every four people living with a mental illness in the United States has a serious disorder and likely need professional treatment beyond making simple lifestyle changes. However, this means that about 75% of them, by definition, do not have a “serious” mental illness and would benefit from having a consistent exercise routine that they follow. Exercise is an effective treatment for different types of mental illnesses and is widely prescribed by health professionals to treat symptoms of various mental disorders. On a personal note, I feel that we need more widespread mental health awareness in order to improve the lives of those suffering from mental illness. Consistent exercise has been one of the most important lifestyle changes that I’ve made in managing my own mental health issues and I hope that sharing my personal journey to build a better mind and body can help you live the life you want.
