Wood is a force of nature! In the world of log cabins and timber framing, "checking", which is the technical term for splitting or cracking of wood, is a natural phenomenon. In fact, it contributes to the rustic look that so many homeowners are after. But is it safe? In this video, Bert discusses the fact that checking is not only normal, but safe. But if you're concerned about structural safety, Bert will discuss what you should really be worried about - later in the video. Discussion includes "Boxed-Heart Timbers" and "Free-of-Heart Timbers" - which are two different methods of cutting posts and beams. In exposed beam construction you must work with the natural tendencies of wood in order to construct a beautiful and secure structure. This is totally possible with proper engineering and understanding of tension loading. There are pro's and con's to both situations, but generally a timber that isn't cut from the middle of the log is most desirable. So which do you need? Listen on as Bert explains the drawbacks and benefits of both options! Learn about Timber Framing, Explore Floor Plans & Project Galleries! https://arrowtimber.com/
