Here Jessica and I have marked (in flagging) a trial crown thinning in a high-site, 40-year-old white pine-red spruce stand on our Pine Paradise Tree Farm. Stand history here is not a pleasant one normally (1980s liquidation cut, 42-acre subdivision lots, of which we have two), but for some reason, this all seeded in to an amazing stand of pine and spruce. Better yet, it is on a northern hardwood soil - Plaisted series mostly, among the best in Maine's north woods. Trees were over 70 feet tall with a breast height age of 35 when we last inventoried in 2019, a site index of 85. Basal area is well over 200 square feet per acre, including 30-40 of unmerchantable spruce in the mid- and lower stories. We're striving for crown release on 100 white pines per acre, cutting about as many as we're leaving, but not exceeding a 40% removal to guard against windthrow. The stand should have been treated with a heavier low-density thinning when it was shorter, but it just grew by us, being on such a high site. Markets are as good as they have been in many years, and we can even sell pine pulp, which we will have a lot of, for $2 per thousand pounds.
