Within hours of the polls closing on voting for El 1"VT+BVU Salvador's legislative Assembly, Duarte was claiming he had won a majority for the first time and been given a mandate for mild reforms and talks to end the 5-year civil war. Ultra rightist Roberto D'Aubuisson, whose coalition had held 33 of the 60 assembly seats, said nothing. Fears were that his supporters would return to the killing streets weatring their death squad hats.
