FARM BACKROUND After 15 years farming in Taranaki together and working their way up the dairying ladder Miah and Jenny purchased this farm in 2011 and are equity partners with Jenny's parents and uncle. The farm was converted out of pine trees in 2007 and they milk 540 cows off 250 ha with the help of one fulltime staff member the farm is still developing and they feel there is more potential in the farm. CATALYST FOR CHANGE Miah attended Dr Christine Jones talk in Paeroa April 2015 – “came back converted” was Jenny’s comment – which was unlike Miah. AgriSea team visited including Dr Christine Jones and proposed an on-farm trial. Friends and neighbours, were very sceptical “give them the worst part of the farm” , which Miah and Jenny did. FARM SNAPSHOT BASELINE 2015 Stocking Rate 2.2/ha ,DM production 8-9t/ha, Cost to produce $4.50 per kg/ms. Fertilisers costs and use $160,000-$230,000. Mainly DAP, Urea, Pro gibb Empty rates 12-15%, Cell count 200-300SCC (Some bad Mastitis) Grass grub issue – losing paddocks to pigs in “worst part of farm” NO WORMS – Have tried importing tiger worms and compost to no avail. N deficient, Short roots, Minimal topsoil, Low pH and Calcium – from soil tests, Low Boron levels – also from soil test FARM GOALS Increase top soil and pH levels Work-life balance, OAD Milking option? Increase profitability FARM TRIAL PROPOSAL. A study to determine the differences in soil fertility and plant quality by using both AgriSea biostimulants and Conventional fertlilisers was undertaken across 6 sites on a commercial dairy farm in Atiamuri.
