SAME 3. 20 34 HORSES TO STARTING GATE & START OF RACE Only six in the starting gate... two are odds-on favorites: Preakness winner Bold Ruler is 17 to 20 ... Gallant Man at 19 to 20. Bold Ruler is out fast to take the lead for the 77,000 dollar winners purse. Last time Willie Shoemaker was aboard Gallant Men, he mistook the sixteenth for the finishing pole of the Kentucky Derby and lost the race by inches. Bold Ruler, favored than too, came home fourth. 4. 22 36 CROWD The fast action comes at the half-way mark. Gallant Man catches and then passes his stable mate Bold Nero for second place. And the Irish-bred horse keeps going. (PAUSE) With seven sixteenths of a mile to go, Gallant Man catches Bold Ruler and they race neck and into the final turn. 5. 35 58 GM PASSES HORSE & CATCHES LEADER 6. 37 61 CROWD In the homestretch, Gallant Man begins to open up a lead. Bold Ruler tires and drops out of contention. Long shot Inside Tract passes him for second place. Out in front by 8 lengths--no mistaking the finishing pole-Willie Shoemaker and Gallant Man. They set a new American mark for the mile and a half-- two minutes, 26 and six-tenths seconds.
