Rioja wine is made by combining coconut-scented American oak with the velvety red fruit of Spain's native tempranillo grape. This results in a wine that is really exquisite. The region's finest wines make it to shops with years of age on them and represent the best values in all of wine when compared to similarly aged wines from France or Italy. What Is Rioja? Rioja is a specific kind of wine that is awarded the Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.Ca) label since it is produced in the La Rioja region that is located in the northeastern part of Spain. History Of Rioja Wine. Since Roman times, the valley of the Ebro River in Spain has been used for the production of wine. The production of wine slowed down significantly when the region was occupied by the Moors, but Christian monks managed to revive the industry by the turn of the sixteenth century. Due to Rioja's remote location and challenging trading conditions, the vast majority of the region's wine production was drunk inside its borders. In the middle of the 1800s, the Marqués de Murrieta constructed the first bodega (wine cellar) in Logroa, which is the capital of La Rioja. What Are the Characteristics of Rioja? Rioja is the highest-quality wine produced in Spain. When the appellation system was inaugurated in Spain in 1933, it was the first wine to acquire DO status. In 1991, it was one of just two wines to be raised to DOCa status, which is the highest quality rating. What Kind of Grapes Is Rioja Made From? Rioja tinto is typically a blended wine that is made from the Spanish grape tempranillo along with minor amounts of other grapes; however, single varietal wines are becoming more popular in recent years. Rioja tinto is traditionally made from the tempranillo grape. Red grapes approved in Rioja wine include: tempranillo, garnacha tinta, graciano, mazuela, and maturana tinta. Where Does Rioja Wine Come From? The Rioja wine area is divided into three distinct subzones: The highest point in La Rioja, situated near the town of Haro. This area accounts for almost two-thirds of total Rioja production. Rioja Alavesa is situated in the Basque Country, near the town of Laguardia in the lava province. This area accounts for 20% of Rioja production. Different Style of Rioja Wine. Gran Reserva must be aged for at least five years, with at least two of those years spent in oak barrels. White and rosé wines need much less time in wood for maturity than red wines. Sparkling wines must be aged on their lees for a minimum of 15 months. What do you think about this video?
