You’re listening to “How Street Art Preserves the History of LA’s Historic Filipinotown,” by Camelia Heins, with support from the staff at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, or SIPA. This podcast aims to explore gentrification, both in the past and ongoing, in Historic Filipinotown through the lens of street art, showcasing how public art contributes to the fabric of a community. SIPA was established in 1972, offering the community various resources from cultural education to youth development programs. Maraming salamat to all those who shared their stories with me during this process. Jamuna, Bboe, Maryrose and Gerald, I am forever changed by your insights. I am extremely thankful we all get to enjoy your art and contributions to this community to this day. If you’d like to visit the murals I talked about, here’s some more information about where to find them. “Gintong Kasasayan, Gintong Pamana” by Eliseo Art Silva can be found at Unidad Park at 1650 Beverly Blvd. Maryrose Mendoza and Christine Morla’s mural Mga Magigiting na Babae: Valiant Women is located at 1714 W Temple St. Drive down Beverly and you’ll see electrical boxes of Filipino flags painted by Ilocano LA, along with their mural outside of SIPA’s office at 3200 W Temple St. Ilocano LA also has another mural located on Rosemont and Temple, which Gerald referenced to. I briefly mentioned a mural by Bodeck Luna and Jonathan Cohen, located at 1800 Beverly Blvd. Talang Gabay, HiFi’s Gateway, which was designed by Eliseo Art Silva and Celestino Geronimo Jr. is at 1557 Beverly Blvd. Faustino Caigoy’s mural is no longer visible but it was located on Beverly and Union.
