भारत में आम को फलों का राजा कहा जाता है। भारत पाकिस्तान और फिलीपींस का राष्ट्रीय फल आम है जबकि बांग्लादेश में आम के पेड़ को राष्ट्रीय पेड़ का दर्जा प्राप्त है। वैसे तो आम पूरी दुनिया का पसंदीदा फल है लेकिन आम का प्रमुखता से उत्पादन केवल भारत और उसके पड़ोसी देशों के साथ साथ दक्षिण एशियाई देशों में ही होता है। इसका सबसे बड़ा कारण है इन देशों का ट्रॉपिकल क्लाइमेट जो आम के उत्पादन के लिए बहुत ही अनुकूल है। साधारण तौर पर आम के पेड़ों में सलाना केवल एक बार ही फल लगते हैं। आम के पेड़ काफी बड़े और घने भी होते हैं जिसकी वजह से ज्यादातर मामलों में इसे जमीन पर ही लगाया जाता है। बीज से उगाए गए आम के पेड़ में फल आने में 10 से 12 वर्ष तक का समय लग जाता है और इस बात की भी कोई surety नहीं होती है कि उन पेड़ों से मिलने वाले फलों की गुणवत्ता उन आमों की तरह ही होगी जिसके बीज से उसे उगाया गया है। लेकिन आधुनिक तकनीकों की मदद से अब आम की ऐसी हाइब्रिड प्रजातियों को विकसित कर लिया गया है जिनके पौधों का आकार अपेक्षाकृत काफी छोटा होता है और उन्हें लगाने के सिर्फ 1 साल के अंदर ही वह फल देने लगते हैं। आम की कुछ प्रजातियां तो ऐसी भी है जिसमें पूरे वर्ष भर फूल और फल लगते रहते हैं। आम के ऐसे पौधों को ग्राफ्टिंग तकनीक से तैयार किया जाता है जिसमें रोग प्रतिरोधक क्षमता वाले देसी आम के पौधों के रूटस्टॉक के ऊपरी भाग में हाइब्रिड वैरायटी के उच्च गुणवत्ता वाले आम की डाली को जोड़ दिया जाता है। आम के ऐसे पेड़ों की सघन खेती से 2 से 3 साल के भीतर ही व्यापारिक लाभ कमाने की शुरुआत की जा सकती है। इसके अलावा आम के ऐसे पौधों को मध्यम या बड़े आकार के पॉट या कंटेनर में भी आसानी से उगाया जा सकता है यानी टेरिस के ऊपर उगाने के लिहाज से या किचन गार्डनिंग के लिए भी आम की ऐसी प्रजाति पूरी तरह उपयुक्त होती है। आम के ऐसे ही एग्जॉटिक वैरायटी के कुछ पौधे मैंने एक ऑनलाइन नर्सरी से मंगवाए हैं। आम के ये सभी पौधे थाईलैंड के आम की अलग-अलग किस्में है जिन का परिचय मैं आपको बताऊंगा। आम के अलावा कुछ और भी एग्जॉटिक प्लांट्स हैं जिससे मैंने उसी नर्सरी से मंगवाया है। इन सब की अनबॉक्सिंग में आपको दिखाऊंगा और साथ ही नर्सरी का एड्रेस भी आपके साथ शेयर करूंगा। Mango is called the king of fruits in India. Apart from this, such mango plants can also be easily grown in medium or large sized pot/ containers, that is, such mango species are perfectly suitable for growing on the terrace or for kitchen gardening.
