Tensions arose as American settlers, invited to colonize Texas under Mexican law, clashed with the central government over issues like immigration, cultural differences, and the centralization of power under President Antonio López de Santa Anna. These disputes escalated into armed rebellion after the 1835 Battle of Gonzales, famously marked by the "Come and Take It" flag. Key events of the revolution include the Siege of Béxar, the fall of the Alamo, and the massacre at Goliad, which galvanized Texan forces. The turning point came at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, where General Sam Houston's army defeated Santa Anna in a surprise attack, securing Texas independence. The Treaty of Velasco, signed soon after, established the Republic of Texas, though disputes over its sovereignty and eventual annexation by the United States lingered, contributing to future conflicts like the Mexican-American War.
