Game’s are more bloated than ever, cost more than ever, and are generally worse than they have ever been. Then congrats you aren’t alone, and in my opinion, aren’t without a solution. You see, part of the problem of gaming being so “boring” is that gaming is now so saturated. Every year we have endless games that are open world, or live service, or both, and if you aren’t into those then it feels like the whole genre isn’t made for you. The easy rebuttal is to “play indie games” and yea, sure, but that too is so oversaturated that it’s hard to separate the Undertales from the Deep Space Waifu’s, and chances are, you have a job, so spending hours sifting through the mud until you find a piece of gold isn’t viable. To try and solve this for you, I want to talk about some games and methods that will possibly reignite your love for the hobby, and after, try to figure out how we got here in the first place. The first game I want to talk about is Haste, a game that, as I’m sure you can see, is heavily inspired by Sonic The Hedgehog, and it illustrates one of the ways that modern gaming can feel lame, and how to alleviate that feeling. Sonic, according to some fans, has been consistently going downhill, no pun intended, and that would suck a lot. The solution, see what other developers are doing within that niche. Haste takes the same concepts of sonic, high speed, precise platforming, and puts it into a different aesthetic, world, and incorporates some rogue lite elements to make each playthrough a little different. When we consider that it comes at a fraction of the cost of current Sonic games and further consider that you might have more fun, it could be a great way to reinvigorate your love for the genre.
