November 8, 1968: A lone gunshot breaks the silence of a cold winter's day. Rear Admiral Charles Butler McVay III, disgraced by the Nation and Navy he'd proudly served, hated by the families, and haunted by the ghosts of those he could not save, ended his own life, the final victim of a tragedy that never should've happened. July 30, 1945: The most destructive war in history is drawing to a close as the Portland class heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis makes her way through the darkness on her way home from delivering a cargo that would change the course of history: the Little Boy Atomic Bomb. It would be a voyage neither she nor 880 of her crew would finish. Torpedoed by the submarine I-58 Indianapolis sank into the abyss, with 300 of her crew trapped on board and those who managed to escape set adrift. For four days the survivors would succumb to their injuries, dehydration, starvation and shark attacks. By the time rescue reached them only 317 of 1,195 officers, sailors, and marines onboard Indianapolis would be pulled from the water.
