Protesters marching waving branches STORYLINE: On April 2nd 2015 one hundred forty seven people were killed in an attack by Islamic extremists on a college in northeastern Kenya. Earlier that day, Kenya's Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery put the death toll at around 70 but conceded that it could go higher. The attack by Somalia's al-Shabab militants lasted for 13 hours. The four attackers were strapped with explosives which went off like bombs when they were hit by gunfire from Kenyan officers. The four also died in the attack. *** Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed on April 4th to take harsh measures against the Islamic militants who carried out the attack on the Garissa University College. In a nationally televised address, Kenyatta declared three days of mourning "following the heinous attacks and the mindless slaughter of 147 Kenyans in Garissa." Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery updated the number of people killed by al-Shabab gunmen at the university campus to 148. The discrepancy in the figures could not be immediately explained. He said four militants were killed during the shootout at the campus and that the country's "security forces are pursuing leads to the remaining accomplices." The president also said he put a 220,000 US dollar bounty for information leading to the capture of the mastermind of the attack, which the authorities believe is Mohamed Mohamud, also known as Dulyadin Gamadhere, a former teacher at a Kenyan Madrassa Islamic school. *** The assets of dozens of businesses were frozen on April 8th by the Kenyan government in a crackdown targeting organisations and individuals suspected of financing Islamic extremists. It follows an attack by Somalia-based al-Shabab militants on Garissa University College last week that killed close to 150 people. A list of 85 companies and individuals was identified by the government's Financial Reporting Centre because of suspicious transactions. The list includes 13 organisations dealing with Somali remittances, and human rights groups like Muslims for Human Rights and Haki Africa, which have been critical of the Kenyan government's counter-terrorism strategy. *** Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
