Keynote address by Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda

In his keynote address at the 13th annual UK-Uganda Convention, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, extended gratitude to the organizers and key figures, including The Right Honourable Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs. He emphasized the significance of the high-level Ugandan delegation's presence, underscoring the government's commitment to unlocking Uganda's potential in a market of approximately 300 million within the African community. Rt. Hon. Tayebwa conveyed a powerful message about Uganda's resilience, particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the country's stable economy and its ability to continue thriving despite closed borders. He assured investors of a secure and conducive environment for investment, referencing Uganda’s remarkable recovery and stability post-independence, and the return of properties to Asians who lost them during tumultuous times. The Deputy Speaker stressed Uganda's strategic position in Africa, a continent poised for significant growth by 2050, and its role as a peaceful, stable, and refugee-welcoming nation. He outlined the government's efforts in ensuring energy security, with over 90% renewable energy, and infrastructure development with the support of the UK and other partners. Focusing on the ease of doing business in Uganda, Rt. Hon. Tayebwa highlighted the government’s strategies in reducing the cost of doing business, such as providing efficient electricity, reliable internet, and strong infrastructure. He also noted Uganda's advantageous position as a land-linked country, providing access to the wider African market, especially with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Deputy Speaker also pointed out Uganda's investment in human resources, ensuring a skilled workforce to support foreign investment. He emphasized the government's focus on poverty reduction and increasing purchasing power as key strategies for economic growth. Rt. Hon. Tayebwa concluded by affirming Uganda's attractiveness as a business destination, highlighted by the close collaboration between the government and the private sector, exemplified by the inclusion of business delegations in presidential trips. The 13th annual UK-Uganda Convention, themed "Unlocking Uganda’s Trade Investment and Export Potential," successfully connected businesses and facilitated discussions on trade development. It raised awareness of the investment opportunities in Uganda, covering key sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and manufacturing, setting the stage for future collaboration and investment between Uganda, the UK, and the broader East African Community.
