Are prisons meant to punish or to rehabilitate? After release from prison, many ex-offenders find themselves serving a second lifetime sentence of debt outside bars. An inability to manage debt is a primary reason for recidivism and the reason some end up back in prison again. Guro Sollien Eriksrud and Red Cross Oslo have identified a feasible solution to this problem that aims to give offenders a real second chance beyond bars. Guro Sollien Eriksrud is a former journalist who left the scintillating world of journalism to pursue an alternate career path after finding her true calling as a volunteer with Red Cross’s “Network etter Soning” program. Armed with a specialisation in Criminology from the University of Oslo and Economics Management from Lillehammer College, Guro now manages Network Debt - a self-driven initiative targeting individuals inside and out of prison to support them with reintegration into society. To this end, she works with a team of volunteers, collaborates with various partners and has also published a book and made a film for distribution to the correctional services all over Norway.
