Johan Wagenaar's humoristic scenic cantata 'De schipbreuk' (The shipwreck) from 1889 stands as one the masterpieces of Dutch Opera, and it is still infrequently performed to date. If you want to know why this piece is so famous, you should look beyond the parodies of Rossini & co (which Francis van Broekhuizen masterly excecutes here). The refinement is rather to be seen in the way that Wagenaar links parody with his own musical idiom. There is some truly great musical writing, such as the mesmerizing chorus Nr. 8 'On dance before...' We present 'De schipbreuk' here complete, filmed in a semi staged performance of February 8, 2014, at the Dominicus Church in Amsterdam. The three lead roles were perfomred by Francis van Broekhuizen (soprano), Mark Omvlee (tenor), and Sinan Vural (baritone), conducted by Alfrun Schmid. The choirs are AUK Chamber Choir, and Vocal Ensemble Frascanti. On the piano Anna van Nieuwkerken, percussions by Anneloes Meier. Read more about German-Dutch composer at at 401DutchOperas.com.
