Ways to build value in going to our target spot. Think of fading out the lure as soon as we can, think moving from the "bribe to the paycheck" concept. How a target can help a wiggly pup start to find value in being stationary. Working on relaxing is such a crucial life skill! Not always can we "do something" and that's okay at times. Just make sure your pup's needs are still being met while adding in relaxation protocols. Make sure not to make it a negative or make it too hard thus creating a bad association with the place and or stay cue too. Build value in being on that thing/spot and with stay we only reinforce them while they are in their stationary position. Make sure to give breaks/rotate through a few other skills so that they do not get too stagnant in the session. Find it with recall practice. Do not pai recalls with things/situations your puppy find overwhelming/scary. Remember that for a lot of our pups they have very few choices/agency and because of this they may feel that going from whispers of their discomfort may need to move to shouting to get us to finally understand their discomfort or lack of feelings of safety. Make sure to feed into the skills/like behaviors you'd like to have happen again. View them like a bank account, how many deposits have you added to that behavior account? Loose leash walking practice, tips and information. Why how your pup takes their treats may be a window into how they are feeling (overwhelmed/over aroused). Place/bed with stay practice. Pick the position he may be best at, sit vs down position. Keep it short and sweet for greater success for you both! Remember that your pup has very little value in all these skills we would like to have them preform. Why our puppies may be struggling. Loose leash walking practice, front cue. How to introduce the front cue and its helpful uses in different situations. Side/Finish cue and how to help them gain this skill and its benefits.
