What Amniotic membrane grafts (AMG) can do for you. Whether you are a patient or doctor, this video is for you. I demonstrate two different ways to apply AMGs. The 2nd method is on my YouTube: Hollywood Eyes – Dr. Elise Brisco since I could only upload a 10 minute video on IG. Amniotic membranes can treat a wide range of corneal conditions such as: Recurrent Epithelial Erosion or Recurrent Corneal Erosion (RCE) Chemical and thermal burns Severe dry eye disease Neurotrophic ulcers associated with Diabetes, or prior Ocular Herpes infections that are not healing Pterygium AMGs have been shown to reduce inflammation and scarring while promoting re-epithelization and healing of the cornea. This decreases pain and improves vision. I like them because they are natural and effective. Amniotic membrane is a natural tissue from the innermost layers of the placenta that is donated by mothers after giving birth. They contain anti-inflammatory cytokines and peptides that assist with tissue repair. A very thin disc of sterile tissue is placed on the cornea and covered by a bandage contact lens. Over the next 5-7 days, the graft is absorbed by the cornea which aids in the healing process. For patients who continue to have recurring epithelial erosions, AMGs can decrease pain and recurrence effectively. I have seen patients who had episodes of RCE several times a year, go 3-4 years without a recurrence after having an AMG. Amniotic tissue is excellent at decreasing inflammation, promoting healing and lessening scarring and hazing. Amniotic membrane grafts are typically covered by insurance for the treatment of RCE, and the procedure can be done with little discomfort or extensive complications. For optometrists, there are many different AMGs on the market. I recommend ADNEXA which is a placental derived dehydrated amnion graft used to treat various ocular surface disorders. Benefits of ADNEXA: Stored at room temperature with 5 year shelf-life Omni-directional: ADNEXA can be applied in either direction, with no orientation issues under a band-aid contact lens and typically absorbs into the eye in 3-5 days. Extracellular Moisture: preserves optimal moisture levels while maintaining tissue structure and biologic integrity. Anti-microbial : studies have shown ocular grafts to be bacteriostatic against certain bacteria in-vitro. The graft acts as a temporary mechanical barrier on the ocular surface. Immunosuppressive: retains the natural features that allow the body to suppress immune responses & excessive inflammation. For more information go to https://www.adnexaocular.com/
